Why Work with Bill – Retirement

Why work with Bill – Retirement Coaching

You did the retirement math right. Nobody planned the days.

That’s the part I work on. I left a long career myself and I’m semi-retired now, so I’m a few steps ahead of you, not lecturing from the outside. I won’t hand you answers. I’ll help you find yours, then test them through small, real-life experiments instead of waiting until you’ve figured it all out.

Bill Dodd

Thirty years in tech. Semi‑retired. A few steps ahead of you.

Seven reasons people work with me.

  1. I’ve been where you’re standing.

More than thirty years in enterprise technology, at SAP, Sybase, Sun, IBM and HP. Now I’m making the same turn myself. You get a peer first, and a credentialed coach behind that.

  2. I work on the part money can’t solve.

Your financial plan answers whether you can retire. It doesn’t answer what Tuesday afternoon looks like. Money is only about a fifth of the picture. The rest is spiritual, mental, physical and social. My work sits alongside your financial plan, not in competition with it.

  3. I won’t tell you what to do.

I’m a thinking partner, not an advice giver. You know your life better than anyone. My job is to help you hear what you already know.

“You don’t tell me — you lead me to it.”

  4. You leave with more than good conversations.

Build It While You Live It™ turns what you notice into tools you keep: your own Values Wheel, Decision Filters, Success Scripts, an Experiment Log, and a North Star you named yourself.

  5. This is design work, not repair work.

You’re not broken. You’re a capable person taking on an unfamiliar project. Asking “Is this it now, every day?” isn’t ingratitude. It’s common, and it can be worked on, one small experiment at a time.

  6. The work keeps going between sessions.

Personal resources and check-ins keep the momentum going between our calls. When I use AI to help build them, I follow one rule: share the pattern, never the person.

  7. Proven retirement exercises, wherever you are in the process.

Here are a few of the proven exercises my retirement clients work through. Each one leaves you with something written down to keep.

    • Fingerprints & Blueprints. Reconnect with your gifts and what matters most, then decide what you want to build with them.
    • Values & Purpose exercises. With the Values Wheel and the Purpose Tree, name what matters most and what gives your days meaning, then let that steer your next chapter.
    • Retirement Replacements with PERMA. Name what work quietly gave you, like routine, goals and people, and find what replaces it.
    • Curious List & Friend List. What you want to explore, and who you want to spend your time with.
    • Reframing Regrets & Rathers. Name the regrets you don’t want to have, and what you’d rather do instead.
    • Rejuvenation Plan. It all comes together in one written plan for your next chapter.

And that’s just a sampling. There are many more, and which ones we use depends on where you are: still getting ready, right at the door, or already living your next chapter. Wherever that is, there’s a place to start.

    Where clients often start

“I’m very ready for retirement… I don’t think I’ll be bored at all.”

Client in his 50s, a few years from retiring

“The retirement identity is not something I have well identified. I kind of have the here and now pretty well identified.”

Client in his 40s, planning his next chapter

Confident, with nothing on paper yet. That’s a perfectly good place to begin.

“Bill’s thoughtful questions, deep listening, and commitment to continuous learning consistently lead to powerful ‘aha’ moments.”

Coaching client, five years

“This experience has shown me just how powerful it can be to approach setbacks with adaptability and a strong sense of self.”
